Chase Bank was formed in 1955 through the merger of Chase National Bank and The Manhattan Company which created Chase Manhattan Bank. In 1996, Chemical Bank of New York, a leader in the mergers and acquisitions markets, purchased Chase Manhattan Bank and retained the Chase Manhattan Bank name because of its financial market cache. In 2000, the combined Chase Manhattan Bank acquired JPMorgan and Company in one of the largest financial institution mergers to date.
